According to the latest report from the Joseph Rowntree Trust, multi-channel television (Freeview at least) is a necessity of life, although I am duty-bound to point out that very little on the extended digital platform holds up any sort of useful mirror to modern Britain. Like an airport novel, it mostly ignores real problems to get on with the escapist jollity of overseas property, comedy, garden makeovers, shopping, celebrity biography, neatly packaged history by the yard and more stuff about the Titanic than most of us really need.
