Many in the City were left open-mouthed by TPG chief David Bonderman's eleventh-hour decision to pull out from a rescue capital raising for Bradford & Bingley. The Financial Services Authority, which constructed an emergency lifeboat operation this week, is also said to be furious with TPG. The firm, whose origins are in managing the money of the Bass family in Texas, has form in the UK. It was at the centre of a storm of protests after it bought in-flight catering company Gate Gourmet from distressed airline Swissair in 2002. A series of strikes at Heathrow and Dusseldorf followed. TPG has also had a rocky ride at Debenhams, which it took private and then refloated. Some believe the furore caused by TPG's decision to walk away from B&B will die down....
