Associated Press - July 4, 2008 1:03 PM ET RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Fiery former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms has died. The Jesse Helms research center says the 30-year veteran of Congress died of natural causes early this morning at the age of 86. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell calls Helms "a senator whose stature in Congress had few equals." CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Protesters interrupted President Bush's Independence Day remarks during a naturalization ceremony outside the historical Virginia home of Thomas Jefferson. Bush responded to the shouts by saying "we believe in free speech in the United States of America." PARIS (AP) - Former hostage Ingrid Betancourt has been welcomed home to France as a hero.
