California wild fires force thousands to flee

By Catherine Elsworth in Los Angeles Thousands of residents fled as savage wildfires bore down on two Californian coastal communities last night, threatening more than 4,000 homes and sending forest wildlife fleeing toward the Pacific Ocean. Philip Wojtowicz owner of the Big Sur Bakery loads his truck with belongings and goods from the bakery as active fire moves closer A fast-moving blaze closing in on the central coast town of Goleta, near Santa Barbara, was declared the priority as flames neared 2,600 homes and transmission lines supplying power to over 100,000 people. Further north in the scenic tourist attraction of Big Sur, the 64,000-acre Basin Complex Fire threatened the picturesque community from which 1,800 people have been ordered to flee, although some stayed behind to protect their property.
