German chancellor to attend EU-Mediterranean summit in Paris

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will leave for Paris on Sunday to take part in the European Union-Mediterranean summit following an invitation by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, an official said here Friday. Speaking to the press, deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg said the high-level EU-Mediterranean meeting was aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and "revitalizing the 'Barcelona process' by giving a new impulse." Earlier this year, Berlin gave up its stiff opposition to French Mediterranean Union plans after Sarkozy agreed to Merkel's demands to include all EU member states in the newly founded union.
