Romance At Short Notice (Vertigo) Carl Barat was always the sensible Libertine. While Pete Doherty crashed and burned, his old bandmate quietly got on with things. The first Dirty Pretty Things record suggested that Barat's talents were not far off those of Doherty -- but let's put that in context, we're not talking Lennon-McCartney or Morrissey-Marr here, merely a pair of romantic young men with the odd good tune to their name. However, The Libertines still carry much weight among certain souls and Barat has been talking a good game of late. It's a pity then, that he doesn't live up to his own billing. The album's opener Buzzards And Crows hints at a fascinating new direction with its fairground organs and unexpected tempo changes.
