Two transfer stories have dominated the English papers this summer – Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Barry – and both seem certain to end with the players getting their own way, whichever that may be. Players hold all the aces these days when it comes to manufacturing their departures from clubs and the press love a story of discontent and other clubs making mischief. After all, that is a heck of a lot more interesting than the potential selling club reeling out the same old line about the player in question not being for sale. The whole procedure is now a part of football life but some supporters seem to have trouble controlling their anger when it happens. It is astonishing to hear Manchester United fans saying that they would not miss Ronaldo if he departs with some even going as far as to say they don’t want him at the club....
