A DISTRESSED man was last night rescued from the incoming tide as he lay at bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the Isle of Wight. Coastguard cliff rescue teams abseiled to the foot of the cliff to recover the 47-year-old. He was laying on a ledge near the water's edge. A coastguard spokesman said he had been drinking and was thought to have taken some pills. The man had scrambled down the cliff from a coastal path at Whale Chine off the A3055 Military Road near Chale. He was carried back to the top of the cliff on a stretcher by teams from Needles and Ventnor Coastguard where he passed out. The man was taken by ambulance to St Mary's hospital in Newport.
