MPs set to vote on their expenses

MPs will face greater scrutiny of how they spend their expenses MPs are set to vote on changes to their expenses and how their pay is decided as part of efforts to boost the public's faith in the system. They will debate proposals put forward in two separate reports aimed at making the process fairer and more open. The Baker Review on pay recommended cutting MPs out of the process altogether for deciding what they earn, the option favoured by the government. The Members Estimates Committee would include tighter checks on expenditure. The proposals would spell the end of the so-called "John Lewis" list - used by Commons officials to determine whether an expenditure claim submitted by an MP is reasonable.
