PARIS — Zambia's president was in stable condition Wednesday after being transferred to a Paris hospital from Egypt where he had suffered a stroke, a top Zambian official said. President Levy Mwanawasa, 59, fell ill during an African Union summit in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and was rushed to a local hospital on Sunday. A Zambian government statement Monday said he suffered a stroke. Zambia's Vice-President Rupiah Banda said Wednesday that Mwanawasa's condition was stable and that he had been transferred overnight from Egypt to the Percy military hospital near Paris. “He is receiving treatment for hypertension in the intensive care unit,” Banda said in a statement.
