Paris Couture Week Opens With Dior

It's elegant. It's sumptuous. It's couture week in Paris. While the ready-to-wear collections in New York, Paris, and Milan are driven by commercial concerns, the couture shows are flights of sartorial fancy. Yesterday's shows included John Galliano's designs for the storied Paris house of Christian Dior, and Giorgio Armani's highest end-creations for Armani Privé. Dior's long, sweeping gowns in layers of asymmetrical tulle are enough to induce a dreamlike state. And the Armani sense of drama shows up strong in black and white.
