Cole bombing suspect alleges torture

PENTAGON (AP) - An alleged terrorist being charged with the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000 says he only confessed to stop the torture. Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri told a hearing last year that's he's been tortured since his arrest in 2002. He says he only admitted to the Cole bombing and other terrorist acts to make his interrogators happy. The CIA has admitted that al-Nashiri was among terrorist suspects who were water boarded in 2002 and 2003 while being interrogated in secret prisons. The Pentagon says it will have to be decided at trial whether any confessions that resulted are tainted. Al-Nashiri, who is a Saudi, is charged with "organizing and directing" the bombing of the Cole, which killed 17 sailors. The Pentagon wants the death... [read full story]
