Forsyth misses Open opportunity

Alastair Forsyth missed out on a place at The Open following a play-off at the 36-hole qualifier at Sunningdale. The Scot was in a tie for the halfway lead after a five-under-par 65 over the Old Course but could only manage a 71 on the New Course in the afternoon. With 18 places at Royal Birkdale up for grabs, Forsyth finished in a tie for 17th place with five others. Forsyth was among the four men to be squeezed out in sudden death play, along with Jose Maria Olazabal. Gary Orr and Marc Warren were the nearest other Scottish challengers, both finishing on two-under-par. Those not already in the Royal Birkdale field will need to finish in the top five at either the European Open or the Scottish Open.
