Kansas Post 539 wins Junior Legion Firecracker opener

MATTOON – Curt Washburn pitched a two-hitter and Garrison Stenger ripped a pinch-hit three-run homer in his first at bat for Kansas Post 539, which beat Shelby-Moultrie Post 68 in today’s opener Mattoon Post 88’s Junior American Legion Firecracker Classic baseball tournament. Washburn also had two hits and Joey Miller added a pair of singles for Kansas Post 539, which is to play again at 4 p.m. today against Mahomet in the tourney at Mattoon’s Grimes Field. Dalton Whetsell and Colton Piper had the hits for Shelby-Moultrie, whose next game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the tourney.
