Tenacious Keothavong earns plenty of plaudits in defeat

Published Date: 27 June 2008 WHEN Venus Williams raced into a 2-0 lead at the start of her second-round match against Anne Keothavong, there looked like being every chance that the contest between the reigning champion and the British No1 would be embarrassingly one-sided. Instead, Keothavong dug in and began to frustrate the American, and in the end emerged with some credit from a 7-5, 6-2 defeat. Williams, it should be said, was playing in error-prone mode, and looked far from the form that has given her four ti tles here. But Keothavong's refusal to lie down had something to do with that, and the last British survivor in the women's singles showed no undue respect for her celebrated opponent, at one stage volleying the ball straight into her opponent's face.
