Mokbel to fight extradition in court

Tony Mokbel will fight his extradition from Greece in the Supreme Court. Mokbel, 42, appeared via video link in the Melbourne Magistrates Court this morning for a brief hearing. He appeared to be dressed in the same dark suit and wide-collared white shirt he wore for his court appearance in May after being brought back to Australia. Mokbel spent just over a year on the run after jumping bail in March 2006 before being arrested in Athens last June. His lawyer, Mirko Bagaric told Chief Magistrate Ian Gray the Supreme Court was the proper venue to hear legal argument over whether Mokbel's extradition had been legal. State prosecutor Phillip Raimondo and Commonwealth prosecutor Michelle Sewell agreed the matter should be heard in the Supreme Court.
