Consumer advocates are advising shoppers to make sure all is rosy before buying from businesses selling pink-ribbon products that are supposed to raise money to fight breast cancer. The Better Business Bureau offered that advice on Wednesday, citing a surge in pink promotions in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. "In this economy, when they're giving to charities, (consumers) should be educated on what percentage actually goes to the charity," said Paula Fleming, a vice president for Better Business Bureau. Outright false donation claims are rare, Fleming said. It's more that customers should know that the percentage donated per product can vary greatly.
