The Prince of Wales spoke yesterday of his heartbreak and horror at the loss of the most senior British officer to die in Afghanistan. Prince Charles said he had been 'mortified' by the deaths of Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, a man he knew well, and of 18-year-old Trooper Joshua Hammond who was killed with him.
