Jul 2 2009 WalesOnline THE Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards has been killed in Afghanistan. Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, 40, is the most senior British officer to be killed in action in Afghanistan and is highest-ranking British casualty since Colonel ‘H’ Jones in the Falklands War. He was blown up in an armoured vehicle by a hidden bomb yesterday afternoon. Lt Col Thorneloe and a second victim, Trooper Joshua Hammond, of 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, were killed about 8km north of Lashkar Gah in Helmand province. Lt Col Thorneloe was the most senior serviceman to be killed in Afghanistan since operations began in October 2001.
