Apr 8 2009 by Sally Williams, Western Mail WALES’ beaches are among the most litter-strewn in the UK, a report reveals today. The amount of litter on Britain’s beaches is at its highest level ever, according to the Marine Conservation Society’s MCS Beachwatch 2008 Survey Report. The same report reveals that Welsh beaches have the second highest level of litter in the UK, with 2,550 items per kilometre – higher than the UK average of 2,195. Wales has the highest amount of fishing debris, with 462 items per kilometre – much higher than the UK average of 302. MCS is calling on the Assembly and the other UK Governments to develop a marine litter strategy together, to improve the state of our beaches.
