For Whom the .Tel Tolls

The .tel top-level domain opened its doors to the general public this week, and on the first day, about 250,000 applications were filed for 70,000 unique domain names, said Justin Hayward, the communications director at Telnic, the operator of the .tel registry. The operators of the .tel domain are trying to make it into a phone book for the Internet -– a virtual contact management system for businesses, organizations and individuals. Holders of a .tel address can store e-mail addresses, links to personal Web sites, identities for online social networks and even old-fashioned phone numbers and street addresses.
