Start-up Telnic says it has sold tens of thousands of .tel domains--but to whom? The Web is an alphabet soup of domain names, ranging from the familiar .com and .net to the European .eu and mobile-focused .mobi. Last year, London-based start-up Telnic joined the fray with a new domain called .tel. The goal: to build a global online phonebook via a web of linked pages ending in .tel. Telnic's pitch: give people a place where they can always find you. Telnic describes the system as a relatively cheap, easy and potentially useful way to develop a Web presence. For a reasonable fee, up to $100 a year, organizations and individuals can register their name followed by .tel and use the domain to list their Web site, e-mail address, phone number and even location.
