Which was worse? The scenes out on the perimeter fields of Barajas airport, with the boiling bodies and burning grass. Or the scenes inside the terminals at both Madrid and Las Palmas, where stricken relatives and friends waited for news of passengers who were never going to arrive. At first their horrified faces still held the shadowy promise of hope. Soon, however, some were on the floor, screaming with grief. It was a terrible sight. Even through the ameliorating prism of television news footage or newspaper photographs, witnessing the deep shock of those who are bereaved violently and without notice is still something that strikes deep into the human psyche.
