Sweden's Modern Times Group (MTG) has expanded its reach into Central Europe with the acquisition of Nova Television, owner of Bulgarian channel Nova, for US$966m. MTG already operates the family of Diema channels in Bulgaria through its 50% controlling interest in Balkan Media Group. The Diema channels had a 10.0% combined share of viewing (18-49) in the first half of 2008. The transaction is expected to yield major synergies for MTG's Bulgarian TV operations and to facilitate the development of MTG's 'media house' approach in the country's TV market. MTG said the deal would be financed from existing available funds and from US$494m of new debt.
