This is Peter Hitchens' Mail on Sunday column I was wrong about the Glasgow East by-election. I thought Labour would win it. Since I never said so in public, I could keep quiet about this if I wanted to. But it’s more interesting to be honest. Something profound and unsettling is happening in British politics, something not seen in my lifetime. I don’t believe that 6,000 voters suddenly decided that they would be better off in an ‘independent’ Scotland. David Cameron’s alleged magic powers also seem to have failed to operate north of the border, any more than Alex Salmond’s chubby smirk appeals much in England. The Tory vote in Glasgow fell even lower than it already was. People who might have voted Tory in Crewe obviously voted SNP in Glasgow, which means that neither party can really claim much credit.
