Closure plan for maternity units

The new maternity unit at Scarborough will open next year Three maternity units in North and East Yorkshire are to close and be replaced with a new purpose-built facility. Units at Bridlington, Malton and Whitby will close once the new unit is opened at Scarborough Hospital. An independent report to Health Secretary Alan Johnson said the smaller units were not producing enough births to be considered sustainable. The decision has been criticised by protestors who say there will be a long journey for some mothers-to-be. The Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP) was asked to submit a report to the health secretary following a referral from scrutiny health committees of North Yorkshire County Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
