European Union could provide funds to save ferry crossing between Scotland and Belgium

THE ferry service between Scotland and Belgium could be saved with EU funding. EC transport commissioner Antonio Tajani said that the Rosyth to Zeebrugge service is of "European importance" in a letter to SNP MEP Alyn Smith. Greek firm Superfast, owned by venture capitalists Attica, announced earlier this year that they are to pull out of running the service by September. But after meeting Forth Ports chiefs yesterday, Smith said he believed it could be saved. He added: "I've had it chapter and verse from the EU Commission that 35 per cent future provision could be funded by the EU." Smith gave Forth Ports director Alan Burns a letter from Tajani which indicates that any new operators could be in line for EU funding assistance.
