D8 warns of food, fuel disaster

Wednesday, July 09, 2008 KUALA LUMPUR: Warning that escalating food and fuel prices could lead to disaster, the group of eight developing Muslim nations (D8) called on Tuesday for urgent measures to lift food and oil output and a rethink on biofuels. Malaysia and Indonesia, the world's largest producers of palm oil, told the D8 summit that they wanted to see an end to the conversion of arable land for biofuel production. The D8 leaders said at the summit in Kuala Lumpur that the twin problems of food and energy security were putting a severe strain on their countries, especially on the poor. The D8 — Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Malaysia, Turkey, Pakistan, Nigeria and Bangladesh — represent about 1 billion people, or 14 per cent of the world's population.
