John McCain's tightrope act on immigration continued Tuesday, when he told a major Hispanic group that he's sticking by his pledge to satisfy demands for tighter border security before trying again to enact any sweeping reforms. "I and many other colleagues twice attempted to pass comprehensive immigration legislation," he said, but many Americans, mindful that previous attempts at reform failed to stem immigration as promised, were skeptical.
