Sergio Garcia told last night how he was inspired by Spain's sensational sporting summer to go on the rampage at the European Open. El Nino ripped through the field with a brilliant 64 to move within striking distance of halfway leader Ross Fisher at The London club. It was his lowest round of the year but it needed to be for anyone back home to take any notice - so drunk on sporting success are his countrymen. When your football mates have won Euro 2008 and your tennis pal has romped into another Wimbledon final, only the spectacular will do. Add to that lesser-known compatriot Pablo Larrazabal winning the French Open last week and Garcia is in danger of becoming the forgotten man. At least he was until he reached the turn in four-under-par figures and finished eagle-birdie to get within a shot of the course record set a day...
