Gran takes drug battle to court

A GRANDMOTHER fighting for a drug that could give her months more to live is taking her battle to the High Court. Jean Murphy, 62, has kidney cancer and doctors say the only treatment that will help her is Sutent. Unfortunately for Mrs Murphy, of Salford, Sutent is rarely prescribed in Greater Manchester, although it is routinely available in Cheshire. This week, the government promised an end to the ‘postcode lottery’ that means patient access to drugs differs from town to town. But the changes will most likely come too late for Mrs Murphy, who has been given just 18 months to live. Now, solicitors acting on behalf of the patient have won an emergency hearing at the High Court in London on Friday.
