Israel’s security officials have spent many years and billions of dollars to bolster the country’s defences against attacks from militant Palestinians. This week, however, they were offered a fresh reminder that not even the highest walls and most diligent checks can stop an attacker who lives in their midst. Hussam Duwiyat, the man who killed three Israelis with a bulldozer during Wednesday’s rampage in central Jerusalem, was a resident of the city. Like most residents of Arab East Jerusalem, occupied by Israel since 1967, the attacker held an Israeli ID card allowing him to work and travel in Israel.
