Coldplay's new single tops chart

Coldplay have topped the singles chart for the first time with Viva la Vida, the title track from their new album. The band, fronted by Chris Martin, have had top 10 success before with hits like Yellow and Clocks but until now they have never taken the top spot. Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends - the band's fourth album - is currently top of the albums chart. HMV said the single's success was based solely on downloads from the internet because no hard copies are yet on sale. On Thursday, the four-piece band scored their first US number one single and also topped the US albums chart. Elsewhere on the singles chart, last week's number one Singin' in the Rain by dance act Mint Royale fell seven places to number eight.
