With courage, determination and at great personal risk, she kept schools and clinics for women open in Afghanistan during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell after the American-led invasion of 2002, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women's Affairs, and continued to improve the lot of women in Afghanistan.
