Good schools will be expanded, the Government said, in order to ensure more children get into their first choice of secondary. For the first time, all parents will be surveyed as they apply for secondary school places for their children, it was disclosed. Local councils will be required to ask parents whether they were "satisfied with the quality and range" of state schools offered in a particular area. If large-scale dissatisfaction is found, they must come up with a plan setting out how to improve the number of decent, locally-available schools. The proposals are set out in the Government's new education White Paper. It follows the publication of figures showing one-in-six children failed to get into their first choice secondary school this year.
