'First fish had wrists and elbows'

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 The first 'fish' to walk out of the sea 375million years ago was able to survive out of water because it had developed a neck, wrist and elbow. The crocodile-like Tiktaalik Roseae had fins and gills but also features found only in land-living animals. Four years after the fossil was uncovered, scientists have pieced together the inner workings of its head, braincase, palate and gill arch skeleton. These show how the Tiktaalik was able to support itself on solid ground and breathe air, further substantiating the theory that it really is the missing link between fish and land-based creatures.
