Rebel forces withdrew from an army base in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after having taken it in fierce fighting, the United Nations mission in the troubled country said on Friday as the president called for a mass offensive against the rebels. Forces loyal to renegade General Laurent Nkunda took the Rumangabo base, about 50km north of the provincial capital of Goma, on Thursday after an intense battle.
