Posted to the web 10 October 2008 Anne Mugisha The UN Charter entrusts the UN Security Council with maintaining international peace and security. There are five permanent members of the UN Security Council originally drawn from the victorious powers after World War II: France, China, Russia, United Kingdom, and USA. Ten other members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms starting on 1st January, with five replaced each year. The members are chosen by regional groups and confirmed by the United Nations General Assembly. The African bloc chooses three members. This year Uganda is campaigning for membership on the UN Security Council.
