He played prominent roles in all fields of national work in Sudan in the last decades, he was one of the leaders of the Uprising against the former President Jaafar Nimeiri, joined the SPLM in 1983 as one of its founders, and broke away from it in 1991, together with his colleague Dr. Riek Machar, after that Dr. Lam Akol formed his own faction, the SPLM–United, in1997 when he signed the Fashoda Peace Agreement, then he became the Minister of Transport, and in 2003 he returned to the SPLM once more after having had differences with the government of Ingaz.
