Jul 25 2008 By Ben Spencer Fury As Single Complaint Silences Memorial Clock THE clock on a historic war monument is to be silenced for the first time in 80 years - after just one complaint about the noise from its chimes. Angry locals in Galashiels yesterday slammed council chiefs for ending one of the town's "proud traditions". The chairman of the local British Legion said: "For the flow of history to be interrupted on the basis of a single complaint frankly seems ridiculous." The peel tower clock in the Borders town was built to honour the local men who died in World War I. It has sounded every hour since 1928. Ann Tozer, who owns a nearby bed and breakfast, complained to Scottish Borders Council that the noise from its bell was keeping her guests awake.
