New rules to govern lawyers' TV ads

04:26 PM CDT on Thursday, July 3, 2008 Associated Press The Louisiana Supreme Court has adopted new ethical rules governing the content of advertisements by lawyers. The rules announced Thursday by Chief Justice Pascal Calogero Junior will require lawyers to have their ads reviewed by a committee formed by the Louisiana State Bar Association. The rules specify when attorneys can call themselves certified or an expert in a field of law. Lawyers also will be barred from running ads that "promise results." Lawyers whose ads violate the new rules will be subject to professional discipline. The bar association's president says the new rules are designed to protect the public from deceptive ads.
