Bishops tell G8: No more empty words

Catholic leaders from around the globe lobby the G8 in 2007. [CAFOD/Marcin Mazur] In a joint public letter, the Bishops' Conferences in all G8 nations have pressed world leaders to deepen their commitment to reduce poverty and tackle global climate change The leaders of the world’s richest nations, the G8, will be reminded of past promises on aid and debt as they prepare to meet in Tokyo on 7-9 July. They will also be urged to address the impact that new challenges, such as climate change and the global food crisis, are having on the poor. The letter calls for aid promises made in 2005 – of an additional $50 billion per year by 2010 - to be kept and for increased aid to be committed towards healthcare and education.
