Convicted criminals have been spending their days drinking, smoking drugs and shopping while they are supposed to be paying for their crimes through community service.

The group has been at Windmill Park every Saturday since November last year to paint a fence. It is part of an unpaid work sentence handed to them by the courts.

"To be honest it just takes the mick out of me and all of the rest of the taxpayers who have to pay for muppets like this.”

But the painting has hardly been started and eyewitnesses said the offenders spend the day drinking cans of beer, smoking marijuana and visiting a nearby McDonald's.

A witness handed the photos to the Croydon Guardian this week after becoming so frustrated with observing what the group had been up to each week for the past six months.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "They have been on this particular job since November and they are supposed to be painting the fence around the park but very little has been done. To be honest it just takes the mick out of me and all of the rest of the taxpayers who have to pay for muppets like this."

Another witness who has also been observing the antics of the "workers" said: "I work so hard in my job in Croydon and I am disgusted and devastated that my tax is being wasted on people who commit crimes and spend all day on community service drinking, smoking and shopping."

Unpaid work punishments are handed to people whose crimes have harmed a community, such as being drunk and disorderly, committing antisocial behaviour or criminal damage.

It may also be used for serious one-off offences such as high level drink-driving or driving while disqualified.

According to the Government, community sentences are not a "soft option" and that they "change offenders' behaviour".

It also claims that "unpaid work can also give offenders new skills and opportunities for practical learning in real situations which prepares them for employment or formal training".

The Croydon Guardian has passed the photos on to the the Probation Service and a spokesman said that it will now be investigating the matter.

He added: "We take supervision of offenders seriously. If we are provided with any evidence that offenders are not behaving appropriately we will investigate and take necessary action."

Hmm, I couldn't agree more. The Croydon Guardian sinks to new depths with this hashed together tosh. Obviously a slow news week if the reporter is forced to resort to making up quotes to fit the story she wants, illustrated by a picture of two people who could be anyone smoking in an unmarked van.
Where are the photos of them shopping and drinking as the story claims they do? And what's to say they're on probation even?
I hope the guys in the picture have a good lawyer - I would take them to the cleaners if they accused me of being a druggie with no proof.

If there is any truth in the claim that these criminals have taken 6 months to paint a fence then their supervisor should be sacked.

Give it 6 more months, son. Your brain's not quite ready for sensible thinking.

Bring back the crank machine - 10000 turns a day for these useless members of society.

Let the council paint their own fences.

What a completely ludicrous story. If I didn't know any better, I'd reckon you made half this up.
Come on guys - raise your game a bit. At least the Advertiser doesn't resort to this sort of tripe.

Actually, the Croydon Advertiser is printing this story, there has been an investigation into this report and claims, and the probation service have apologised and are looking into it.

"Christian Levaux" should well know what the Advertiser is doing since a quick search of his ISP address shows that it comes from the company which owns that paper.

And may we ask why they haven't been keeping an eye on things until now???

A friend of a friend (Certainly not my friend) recently described his Community Service to be, and I quote, "A total doss"

Apparently he was supposed to be collecting rubbish or clearing garden waste or something to that effect and he reckons he spent most of the time having a laugh with his supervisor & getting stoned with his fellow convicted criminals.

I was pretty sure he was just being a prat and showing off..(as that's impressive) but after reading this I'm not so sure.

Bring in the Chain Gang!

Do not tar all supervisors with the same brush, There are strict guide lines by the home office, which the majority of supervisors ad here to. I peronally know a supervisor who is hard working and dedicated not only to the community, the projects and to the rehabilatation of offenders.
I know some of the projects that this supervisor has been involved in which has benefited the communities with in the South London area.
It is unfortunate that all members of the public only ever see the bad publicity that is shown in the press and not some of the excellent work that unpaid work units do achieve.

If you stand outside any court you can tell the ones who have received a "Community Service Order" they have great big grins on their faces and tell their mates I got "off" I'm only doing Community Service.

I think I agree with Peter and Christian. What are the sources of this story? "Eyewitnesses". And a "man who did not want to be named."

Come on, now! I'm all in favour of investigative journalism, but this is seriously stretching things! How do we know that these people drinking outside Maccie D's are convicted criminals? How do we know they're supposed to be painting a fence?

Indeed, how do we know that the local probation service has even got a fence-painting project on in the first place?

I haven't been able to verify any of this from any source that isn't linked to the Croydon Guardian.

I think the real story here is that there are a couple of people who work in Croydon, but who are finding their jobs slightly stressful, and are therefore naturally turning their resentment towards those who hang around in the park most of the day. They also feel a need to flesh out the details to make it sound more dramatic than it really is.

But that's life. So get over it!

I have a friend like Dawn who again is a very dedicated supervisor, she is in the process of doing some major work within a school and i have to state what an amazing job she and her team of unpaid workers are doing, the school is going to benefit no end. It seems a shame that this newpaper is only reporting 1% of the bad work that unpaid work is doing in the community and not the other 99% of the excellent work that is going on in communities all over the area... I guess the good work doesn't get the readers.. Isn't it about time that this reporter went out and also showed the other side of The Unpaid Work Units teams.
